Hew talks about one area of his work at YG: Doorstep Sports.
7 September 2015
We run 2 doorstep sports clubs a week.
One is in Priors Park Tewkesbury, central to a Doorstep Club is the fact that a young person doesn’t have to travel very far to participate in sport that is informal, not too structured and is fun.
We have over 95 young people registered with the project and average weekly attendance of 25. The project is partnered with Youth Support Team and the model we have adopted for this project is intertwined with open access youth provision. The Doorstep sports element is led by one of our mentors Jordan Smith it has been running for a year now. Jordan completed his P.E. sport degree in 2014. (Priors park Doorstep Club runs every Thursday 7 – 8:30 pm)
Our 2nd Doorstep Club is also based in Tewkesbury in the Northway area this club is built on the same principle as the Priors Park club. It is based in the community and takes place at a time when young people want it, within walking distance. The model we are using is outreach/detach work, meeting the young people where they are in this case, Gould Playing Field. The project is based outdoors during the summer and in the autumn will move indoors to Northway Parish Council Village Hall. Rich Goulding is the sport coach leading this project. Rich is working towards completing his Degree in Sport (Northway Doorstep is delivered every Tuesday during the summer holidays 2 – 4:30pm @ Gould Playing Fields for further information about Doorstep Clubs visit www.streetgames.org.uk
